Washington DC 4th July fireworks

Where better to celebrate the 4th of July but DC! The Independence Day fireworks over Capitol Hill in Washington DC are the highlight of the country's 4th of July celebrations, and are watched live by thousands on the National Mall, and by an audience of many millions more on TV and via the live stream online.

The nation's capital city draws visitors from all across the country to watch the fireworks display and the preceding 4th July concert on The Mall, and although it is free to attend you will need to get down there good and early to secure a decent vantage point, although the aerial nature of the fireworks themselves does of course means they can be well seen across a pretty wide area.

The talismanic 4th July fireworks are surely the Macy's version in New York, but Washington runs them pretty close, and will certainly be packed with crowds to enjoy all the day's celebrations. With a number of top quality rooftop bars dotted across the city too with amazing views, there is ample opportunity to vary your location making this a truly unique and personal occasion.

Fireworks Schedule

The fireworks take place on The Mall, usually at around the same time the Capitol Fourth concert is ending at approximately 9.09pm.

You also don't want to miss the National Independence Day Parade startin on Seventh Street and Constitution Avenue NW at 11.45am and finishes around 2pm on 17th Street. Here you'll find marching bands, floats, military units and balloons.

Best Fireworks Views

The fireworks are launched from the reflecting pool area, so the optimum viewing spots are obviously on the National Mall itself, the Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial and in Potomac park.

Note that the viewing points on the National Mall near the Reflecting Pool and Washington Monument require access through special security gates, so pay careful attention to what you have in your bags and pockets.

There are also good viewing spots on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the US Supreme Court Plaza, Hains Point on East Potomac Park and Lady Bird Johnson Park.

There are several DC hotels and bars with rooftop facilities too, so check those out if you are a little further afield and don't want to be stuck in the crowds.

TV & Live Streaming

TV coverage this year is expected on Fox News, PBS and C-Span, with the fireworks expected to be part of the "Salute to America" celebration.

Live stream available on PBS Washington 4th July
