The festival season in the United Kingdom really starts to really hot up in late May as the weather finally turns into something that may be optimistically described as a little more reliable! Over in the US they've been rocking out as festivals in places like Florida and California for months now, but in this part of northern Europe we have learned to be just a little more patient!
One of the first festivals of the year is also one of the biggest, with the iconic BBC radio station Radio 1 hosting their now famous Big Weekend. The venue for this event changes year on year, and since it's inception in 2003 has gone on the road to locations as diverse as Manchester, Cardiff, Londonderry, Dundee, Kent, Cumbria and Hackney in London. That's actually venues in 4 different countries of you count them up, and there aren't many festivals can say they've been hosted in as many different nations as that!
Probably the single most unique thing about the Big Weekend though is that the tickets are free! They're given away via an online lottery and various phone-ins and competitions held on Radio 1 via the radio and online in the months leading up to the event - certainly the only festival we're aware of to do so.
Headline acts this year include Katy Perry, Biffy Clyro, Kings of Leon, Bastille, Little Mix and Rita Ora.

As a festival organised by a radio station that also has close links with several TV channels, you would expect to find plenty of coverage available of the Big Weekend, and that is certainly the case, whether on the radio, TV or online, or indeed any combination of the above!
If you're in the UK and have access to a TV you can also catch the main acts via the red button, and for the first time the live coverage from the Big Weekend website is also available this year via the BBC iPlayer
There is also live streaming available on the Radio 1 Big Weekend website, with full live coverage of all the stages:uding for the first time the option to rewind the live streams:
