Latest: The Tokyo Olympic games are set to go ahead this year, albeit with social distancing guidelines and minimal spectators.

The Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games is always a time of great spectacle, a part of the event that is a key part of the overall Olympic experience in a way other sporting events just can't seem to match up to.

The Tokyo Olympics in 2020 (still called 2020 even though it's in 2021) looks set to be no different, with the epic and iconic Olympic Stadium taking global centre stage for the opening ceremony of the long awaited Japanese hosted Olympic Games.

They have a tough act to follow, with the Beijing opening ceremony in 2008 one of the most expensive and visually stunning displays of all time, while the London 2012 effort was somewhat more low key but earned huge plaudits for the production values and attention to details that really sold the venue and location to the watching worldwide TV audience, with numbers watching estimated at around an incredible 1 billion. These numbers may be even higher in 2020 with the addition of live online streaming as a much more prevalent viewing option.

Date

The 2020 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony will take place on Friday 23rd July 2021.
